‘Navy’ or ‘ladder’ stairs are often used in narrow spaces that do not allow for a full stair tread and are commonly used on ships. This hidden staircase offered the owners a short cut to their private rooms on the second floor. The stairs interlock and required precise casting and finishing work to make sure each section was not only level, but fit snugly against its counterpart.
